| Cauvery Education Society (CES) was registered under the Karnataka Society's Act, in the year 1968, with the aim of establishing higher educational institutions in Kodagu. Until 1968 |

there was only one-degree College in Kodagu district namely Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa College in Mercara. Southern parts of Kodagu did not have institutions for higher education. To fill this need Cauvery College was started in 1968 on a 10-acre campus in the town of Gonicoppal located in south Kodagu. |

| Cauvery College is now a well-established co-educational institution with 1200 students.BA and BSc degrees are offered in Arts, Science, and Commerce. The college has also introduced a degree course leading to BBM. The silver jubilee of CES
and Cauvery College was celebrated in 1994.
CES started a separate women's degree college near Virajpet town in the year 1980. This college named: Kavery Women's College has student strength of 550. Kavery Women's College has benefited a large number of girls from weaker sections of the society to become graduates and responsible citizens of the country.

The management felt the need for technical education in this part of Kodagu district to enable the youth to better their career prospects. Cauvery Polytechnic was thus started in the year 1986 within the campus of Cauvery College in Gonicoppal. Cauvery Polytechnic, recognized by the Government of Karnataka and AICTE, New Delhi, is now a well-established institution with an annual student intake of 180. | not many of the local students took advantage of the technical education offered. This situation has changed over the years and we now have 60% of the students from Kodagu. This is a co-educational institution and presently 15% of the students are girls. |
